Manchester City will host Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday as the Barclay’s Premier League opens a full midweek fixture list. City will be looking to rebound from a shocking loss at the weekend against lowly Hull City that slowed down Manchester City’s chase for the final Champions League spot. Bolton remained just above the relegation zone after a goalless draw over the weekend against Fulham. Manchester City’s pursuit of a Champions League spot and top four finish suffered a setback over the weekend as they fell 2-1 against Hull City. American international striker Jozy Altidore scored his first goal in the Premier League after some fine set up play from the Tigers. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink received the ball in the box with his back to goal, laying it off for the American who sent a low curling shot beyond Shay Given in the 31st minute for a 1-0 Hull lead. A strike from George Boateng in the 54th minute doubled Hull’s lead to 2-0 before Emmanuel Adebayor pulled one back for City in the 59th minute. The Tigers held on to hand City a defeat that left them in sixth place now trailing Liverpool by three points for the final Champions League spot. Bolton played out a goalless draw at home against a Fulham side that appeared harmless on attack as many of their strikers are out injured. The Trotters had the best chances of the match, even having one goal unfairly called back for pushing, but in the end were unable to breakdown the Fulham defence. The draw left Bolton just one position above the drop zone.

Bolton defender Gary Cahill is set to be released from hospital on Monday after being admitted over the weekend. Cahill began suffering pain and swelling in his arm on Friday and learned over the weekend that he had a blood clot. Cahill will be out the next few weeks and could even miss the remainder of the season pending the outcome of an appointment with a specialist. Tuesday’s meeting will be the 120th meeting between the two sides with Manchester City having won 48 compared to Bolton’s 45 with 26 draws. Bolton have won just one of their last seven encounters with Manchester City in all competitions.

Both sides will be looking for maximum points from their midweek clash. City now find themselves three points behind fourth place and need a win to keep pace at the very least with a Liverpool side that appears reborn. If Bolton want to remain out of the cellar they will need to collect all three points to be sure as a draw would leave them in danger of falling back into the drop zone.
