Liverpool will be looking to get back on track when they host bottom of the table West Ham United in the final fixture on Saturday in the Premier League. Liverpool appeared to have turned a corner a fortnight ago when they defeated first place Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield. Since then however, the Reds have drawn 1-1 and lost 2-0, losing momentum and falling back into the bottom half of the league table. West Ham enter the match in perhaps their best form of the season, having drawn their last three fixtures to earn a season high three match unbeaten streak. Kickoff between the two is set for 17:30 local time at Anfield in Liverpool, England.

Last weekend in the Premier League Liverpool fell 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium to a lively Stoke City side. After a goalless first half, the Potters struck the first goal of the match in the 56th minute thanks to Ricardo Fuller. Stoke would seal the deal at the death when Kenwyne Jones made it 2-0 with his goal in the first minute of stoppage time. The loss saw Liverpool fall back into the bottom half of the league table. West Ham United held on for a third consecutive draw in the Premier League last weekend, but remained bottom of the table in the process. Their 0-0 draw with Blackpool was a rather lifeless affair that followed up back to back 2-2 draws for the Hammers. On the plus side, West Ham pulled level on points with 19th place Wolverhampton after Wolves fell 3-2 to Bolton.

Liverpool suffered a devastating injury blow during the midweek when they lost Steven Gerrard for up to a month with a torn hamstring. Gerrard was in the lineup for England’s international friendly with France at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday. Gerrard limped off in the 84th minute with what was later determined to be a grad two tear of his hamstring. Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson admitted on Friday to being both “disappointed and a little bit angry” with Gerrard’s injury. The club had reportedly requested that Gerrard play no more than an hour of the match, but didn’t leave the pitch until the 84th minute. Liverpool can ill afford to be without such a vital player for the next month, making Hodgson’s reaction understandable.

To say that Saturday’s matchup is critical to both teams is an understatement. West Ham need to start converting draws into wins if they are ever going to climb out of the bottom three. If Liverpool hope to avoid falling back near the bottom three, they enter the weekend just three points from the drop zone; they too need to start winning consistently.
