London rivals clash in the final match of the Barclay's Premier League weekend when West Ham United hosts Chelsea on Sunday. After climbing out of the relegation zone last month, West Ham United has slipped back down to 19th place thanks to four losses in its last six fixtures. West Ham enters Sunday's London derby against Chelsea riding a three match losing streak. Chelsea won during the midweek, their first in five matches in all competitions, to restore their lead at the top of the Premier League table. Kickoff between the two is set for 16:00 local time at Upton Park in London, England. Game is live from Sky Sports 1 UK TV channel.
West Ham was on the road in the midweek with a match at the Reebok Stadium against then fellow relegation zone member Bolton Wanderers. After a goalless first hour of the match, the two sides exploded for four combined goals in the final half hour as Bolton won 3-1 in exciting fashion. Chung-Yong Lee opened the scoring with a goal in the 64th minute to put Bolton ahead 1-0, but Alessandro Diamanti struck just five minutes later to equalise for West Ham. Lee was involved in Bolton's second goal as his seemingly harmless shot was bobbled by Hammers' keeper Robert Green and tucked into the net by Ivan Klasnic to put Bolton back in front 2-1 in the 76th minute. Gary Cahill put the icing on the cake for the Wanderers with a goal in the 88th minute to seal a 3-1 win for Bolton. After a disappointing draw at the weekend, Chelsea was at home in the midweek hosting bottom club Portsmouth. The Blues dominated the first half of the match, but had only Nicolas Anelka's 22nd minute goal to show for it. Portsmouth stunned the Blues with an equaliser in the 50th minute from Frederic Piquionne. It looked as though Portsmouth would steal a point from Stamford Bridge, but after Marc Wilson hauled down Branislav Ivanovic in the box, Frank Lampard smashed home a penalty in the 79th minute to give the Blues a 2-1 win, restoring their three point lead atop the league table.
France international striker Nicolas Anelka has expressed a desire to extend his contract at Chelsea to remain with the club until 2014. Anelka, 30, has never spent more than two and a half seasons with any club but has so enjoyed his time with the London club that he would like to commit his remaining good years to Chelsea. Anelka's current contract has 18 months remaining. Former Birmingham City owners David Gold and David Sullivan have had their bid to purchase West Ham United frozen this week. West Ham's holding company, CB Holding, is 70% controlled by Straumur-Burdaras Investment Bank which took control in June after the clubs owners had financial problems. Gold and Sullivan's bid has hit a snag this week as the bank had its debt repayments frozen until September, protecting the holding company from going into liquidation and forcing a sale of assets. The move allows the bank time to hear other offers to buy the club. Gold and Sullivan's bid is believed to have been worth roughly £50 million.
Chelsea will be eager to pick up maximum points against one of the league's lower clubs. With Manchester United playing Saturday, Chelsea will either face the pressure to win to restore their three point lead or face the possibility of extending their lead to five or six points depending on the outcome of United's fixture. If West Ham were to lose by more than two goals and Portsmouth won, the Hammers would find themselves at the bottom of the league table.
