Hull City enters the match on better form than Sunderland. After two losses to open the season, Hull has managed a win and a draw in their last two matches. Sunderland's performances have been much more up and down so far, having gone win-loss-win-loss in their four fixtures so far. Hull City earned a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton two weeks ago while Sunderland lost 1-0 to Stoke City.

Sunderland and Hull were both busy as the transfer window drew to a close. Michael Turner moved from Hull City to Sunderland last week while Paul McShane went the opposite direction moving from Sunderland to Hull City. Sunderland purged their squad sending Teemu Tainio to Birmingham City on a season long loan while Danny Collins departed for Stoke City. Hull City brought in Ibrahima Sonko on a season long loan from Stoke City. Sunderland named Lorik Cana captain after Dean Whitehead's departure from the club while Hull City signed goalie Boaz Myhill to a new three year deal.

As in most games, both teams will want to take all three points. Sunderland could move near the top of the table as a victory would push them to nine points on the season. Hull City could jump into the top half of the table with a victory and move away from the bottom of the table in the process.
