Scotland's dreams of reaching the World Cup in South Africa next year rest in their own hands as they host the Netherlands in what will be both sides last group stage match up. In order for Scotland to have a realistic chance of making it into the playoff matches for the final four European World Cup slots, they'll need all three points against the Netherlands. Kick off will be at 20:00 local time at Hampden Park in Glasgow on September 9th, live from Sky Sports 2 TV Channel.
Scotland enters the game riding high after taking control of second place in the group over the weekend. Scotland played host to FYR Macedonia over the weekend, picking up a crucial 2-0 victory. After a scoreless first half, Scotland found the back of the net twice in the second half. Scott Brown scored in the 56th minute and James McFadden sealed the victory in the 81st minute. The Netherlands haven't played a World Cup qualifier since beating Norway 2-0 on June 10th. The Netherlands have swept through the group so far, compiling a 7-0-0 record and have already qualified for the World Cup, the first team from Europe to do so.
Scotland won't have it easy against the Netherlands however. Several players from Scotland's squad are either out or questionable for Wednesday's game. James McFadden, who picked up a yellow card before halftime Saturday, is suspended for the next game as a result of picking up too many cards. Callum Davidson will be out with a hamstring injury, and Scott Brown is questionable with an ankle injury. The lack of pressure on Netherlands is likely to result in them playing very loose, free football which is always dangerous.
The Netherlands really have nothing on the line in this game except the chance to finish the group stage with a perfect record. Scotland needs a win to have a chance of qualifying for the playoff stages in Europe to attain one of the final four spots from Europe in the World Cup.
