Portsmouth sent Nike Kranjcar to Tottenham Hotspurs and brought in several other players. Defender Tal Ben Haim signed a four year deal, moving over from Manchester City. Midfielder Yebda joins Pompey on a season long loan from Benfica, and defender Mike Williamson signed a four year deal coming over from Watford. Portsmouth also said goodbye to striker David Nugent who is gone on a six month loan to Burnley. Bolton's lone move was to bring in Croatian international striker Ivan Klasnic. Klasnic joins the Wanderers on a season long loan from Nantes.

The importance of this match is evident; neither side has a point yet and both are in desperate need of their first victory of the season. Both sides can take consolation in the fact that at least one club will leave this match with their first points of the season. Worst case scenario, a draw gives each their first point of the season. Either way, both sides need points to boost morale and start a climb out of the cellar before the gap between them and the top is insurmountable.
