Liverpool will be looking to collect some crucial points when it hosts Wigan Athletic on Wednesday in the Barclay's Premier League. The Reds appear to have become irrelevant in the Premier League title race this season as they have not cracked the top four since the early stages of the season and in recent weeks have found themselves stuck outside of European contention. Liverpool has managed just one win in its last six fixtures with two defeats and three draws. Wigan's form has been just as miserable with one win, three defeats, and two draws in its last six. Kickoff between the two is set for 20:00 local time at Anfield in Liverpool, England. Game is live from FOX Soccer TV channel.
Liverpool squandered a chance to collect a big win at home at the weekend against Arsenal as they fell 2-1 to the Gunners on Sunday. The Reds dominated the first half, but only had Dirk Kuyt's rebound goal in the 40th minute to show for it, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. It all fell apart for the Reds early in the second half. First defender Glen Johnson directed a low Arsenal cross into his own net to pull Arsenal level at 1-1 in the 50th minute. Johnson was again the victim as Andrey Arshavin collected the ball at the top of the box and slapped a shot past the outstretched Johnson that found its way into the net off the post to give Arsenal a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute. The Reds pressed forward relentlessly in search of an equaliser but could not find a goal as they fell 2-1 to Arsenal. Wigan twice blew a one goal lead against Stoke City this past weekend and was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at the Britannia Stadium. Emmerson Boyce put the Latics ahead in the 15th minute with a header, but Tuncay Sanli's first goal for the Potters in the 37th minute equalised for Stoke before the break. Maynor Figueroa scored in the 72nd minute on an unbelievable free kick effort to put Wigan ahead 2-1, but the lead was short lived as Ryan Shawcross headed home the equaliser for Stoke in the 74th minute. Wigan's Hugo Rodallega had one last chance to give the Latics the win, but Stoke keeper Thomas Sorenson saved his 89th minute penalty to force Wigan to share the spoils.
Liverpool's miserable season continues as the Reds remain on the outside looking in. Liverpool has not been in the top four since early in the season, and currently find themselves 13 points behind first place Chelsea and 10 points behind second place Manchester United. The Reds have already been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and the Carling Cup, and if their poor form continues they may find themselves out of Europe next season all together.
Both sides need to take all three points from Wednesday's fixture. The Latics are currently 14th in the league table with 18 points, but they find themselves only four points away from the relegation zone. If Liverpool is going to make any serious challenge for a European spot they need to start winning and soon.
