Liverpool will be looking to jump into European contention with a victory this weekend when they host Arsenal in the biggest match up this weekend in the Barclay's Premier League. The lone fixture will see two members of the Big Four square off in a match that could have a lasting effect on both club's 2009/10 campaigns. Liverpool has been disappointing and inconsistent throughout much of this season while Arsenal had struggled for two weeks leading up to last weekend. Kickoff between the two is set for 16:00 local time at Anfield in Liverpool, England. Game is live from Sky Sports 1 TV channel.
Liverpool's woes continued last weekend as they were held to a 0-0 draw on the road against Blackburn Rovers. The first half was a dull affair that saw the two sides trade rather harmless shots on each other’s goal. Liverpool dominated the second half with David Ngog coming closest to scoring when his shot rattled the bar, but the match ended 0-0. Arsenal put an end to their two match losing streak last weekend with a 2-0 victory at home over Stoke City. Andrey Arshavin got things going in the right direction early for the Gunners with a goal in the 25th minute to put Arsenal ahead 1-0. Aaron Ramsey sealed the Gunners victory with a goal in the 79th minute, allowing Arsenal to leapfrog Tottenham and take over third place.
Arsenal was rocked by the loss of yet another key player to injury this weekend as Tomas Rosicky left midway through this weekend's 2-0 victory over Stoke. Rosicky left the match with a groin injury and the Gunners learned on Monday that they could be without the midfielder's services for a month. Liverpool meanwhile has opened talks with midfielder Javier Mascherano about extending his stay with the Merseyside club. Mascherano has two years left on his current contract, but manager Rafa Benitez feels that he has returned to top form and the club want to ensure they keep the central midfielder around for a few more years.
Both sides need to come away from Sunday's match with a victory. Liverpool remains 12 points off the pace and need to start moving up the table with positive outcomes. Arsenal's position was helped by Chelsea's loss on Saturday as the Gunners are now within eight points of first place. With Chelsea and Manchester United playing Saturday, the pressure could be on the Gunners to keep pace by the time they kickoff on Sunday.
