Birmingham City's 11 match unbeaten streak will face another tough challenge as the Blues host Manchester United in the final fixture on Saturday in the Barclay's Premier League. Both clubs enter Saturday's fixture with four wins from their last six fixtures but while United has lost two, City are unbeaten in the last six with two draws to go along with four victories. Manchester United will be looking to bounce back from a shocking exit from the FA Cup last weekend after a 1-0 loss at Old Trafford to Football League One side Leeds United. Kickoff between the two is set for 17:30 local time at St. Andrew's Ground in Birmingham, England. Game is live from ESPN UK TV channel.
Birmingham City struggled in a 0-0 draw on the road against Football League Championship side Nottingham Forest on Saturday in the FA Cup's third round. City were on the back foot for much of the match and Forest squandered a golden opportunity in the second half from the penalty spot as the two sides fought out a 0-0 draw. Both sides entered the match on long unbeaten streaks. City extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches while Forest's run was extended to 16 unbeaten matches. The two sides now face a replay at St. Andrew's Ground to determine who advances to the fourth round. Manchester United was unceremoniously dumped out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 loss on Sunday to League One leaders Leeds United. Jermaine Beckford scored the lone goal of the match in the 19th minute to give Leeds all the offense it would need to score an upset over fierce rival Manchester United. The Red Devil's lackluster performance left manager Alex Ferguson in shock as the FA Cup exit was United's earliest in Ferguson's 25 years in charge.
Birmingham City's new ownership has been attempting to throw its money around and improve Birmingham's roster in the January transfer window. City have had offers for Scottish side Rangers' striker Kris Boyd rejected as well as a bid for Celtic's Aiden McGeady. Birmingham also made an £8 million bid to Liverpool for Ryan Babel, a bid that also fell on deaf ears. City was successful in signing midfielder Michel from Spanish side Sporting Gijon for £3 million. Manchester United will enter Saturday's clash with Birmingham minus central defender Nemanja Vidic who re-aggravated a nerve injury in his leg before Sunday's loss to Leeds United.
Manchester United has the chance to steal first place, if for only a short time, from Chelsea on Saturday if they are victorious against Birmingham City. United is currently two points behind the Blues who have had their match at Hull City earlier on Saturday called off due to weather. Birmingham City's unbeaten streak has propelled the Blues close to a European spot. With a victory Birmingham could move up to seventh.
