Birmingham City and Portsmouth both play their second matches of the year Wednesday at St. Andrews. Kick off is at 19:45 BST.
Despite losing 1-0 to Manchester United, Alex McLeish’s Birmingham side gave a solid account of themselves at Old Trafford. Earning a point would have been a fair result for both sides.
Pompey’s 1-0 loss at home to Fulham, however, had to bother boss Paul Hart, especially with the rumored takeover of the club by Sulaiman Al Fahim hanging over his squad. A road point is vital for Wednesday.
McLeish has problems in the back, as new boys, Scott Dann and Giovanny Espinoza, are both scheduled to miss the match. Frank Queudrue continues his experiment as a center-back alongside veteran, Roger Johnson.
While Hart has no new injury problems out of the Fulham match, Steve Finnan and Herman Hreidarsson both remain sidelined due to lingering issues. New signing, Anthony Vanden Borre, is still waiting for his work permit and won’t be available for Wednesday’s action.
Considering it’s their home opener, it’s vital for Birmingham to gain all three points, considering their quality performance against Manchester United. Playing an attacking style might take the pressure off of McLeish’s makeshift back line. As stated earlier, it is absolutely vital for Portsmouth to get at least one point from St. Andrews. A bad start to the season for Pompey is only going to place additional pressure on Paul Hart, especially with Al Fahim looking over his shoulder.
